Well i put in the rams that i bought last week into their own 2 footer. Today I (well, Betina) spotted them spawning, and i managed to snap some photos and movies. Unfortunately they laid on the gravel instead of on the many flat rocks i laid out for em, and i can't take any good photos cos of all the plants in the way.

Anyway anyone have any tips on these guys, anyone bred em here before?

Heres the male:

I have spawned them a couple of times but it's very hard to raise the fry. They are to small to take brine shrimp so you will have to feed them on infusoria or vinegar worms.

Terry, do you have any cultures of infusoria, vinegar eels, or microworms going well at the moment?

I hope i didn't take all your vinegar eels from last meeting terry!

Anyone know where to get daphnia, my friend in bunbury says he gets heaps in his yabby pond, but the yabbies stir up all the mud, so there may be none left. Also another note, anyone interested in possibly getting some feeder yabbies, my friends letting me have free range of the yabby pond, he want's them all out.

Sounds like next holidays fun. Still gotta get me a car :)

Hey Chris

Apparently you can fish around bibra lake for daphnia. Ian the VP of the PCS did a talk about live foods a while back, might be worthwhile chatting to him about it.

Do you have an active vinegar eel culture going?

Terry is a bit further away lol:P

I kinda have a few, but they've been heavily harvested, so I don't have too many, but I'll give you some at the next meeting, and hopefully terry will have some too, then you can have 2 cultures.

Well the rams ate the spawn today. I'm not sure whether it was because of inexperience or because the eggs were infertile. Some were white at the 24hr mark but there were still many that were clear in colour.

I did not do any special preparation of the water as I wasnt expecting a spawn so soon. Next time i will try to soften and lower the pH with some peat filtering.

They do seem to be acting like spawning again, so hopefully they'll go better this time.

However I would still like some microworms so if anyone has any going I would love to get a starter! :)

Yeah those egyptians I got from the PCS auction a few months ago, within the first 5 mins of moving them into another tank the male started displaying, they dug a pit, and the female looked like she was supposedly picking up eggs. I doubt the spawn was successful, and if it was the fry will be meeting my oscars, not sure if you remember but the female was deformed.
I will grab more off you though when I get my new 4ft tank.
