Poll: Age requirements (recommend reading the entire thread first)

Should minors be prevented from accessing the Classifieds?

Should an accurate truthful age be mandatory? (based on birth year)

If age is to be mandatory should this be done via good will or does proof of age need to be witnessed for every user that wants access to the Classifieds? (100's of users)

Please explain how you would determine and rank relative to yourself a person's ability to learn, judge and make decisions based entirely upon their listed age? One could make assumptions, but I recall a common adage that 'when you assume, you make an ass out of you and me' smile.gif

i would determine this on the fact that as we grow we observe more and as such our comprehension and knowledge of things is higher, i know for a fact that i understand way more when learning new things than i did when i was a kid and as such my learning and understanding is excelarated.

i teach martial arts for a living and i can guarantee you that as an adult you will understand more of what you learn compared to when you were young but in saying that when it comes to physical exercises a child will be able to demostrate easier as its more monkey see monkey do and an adult has to overcome the fact that they understand what to do but cant demonstrate as they mentally take in the exercise before they just try it.

mental comprehension because of this will determine how thoroughly you will think things through and make more rational decissions. look at extreme sports like skate boarding and moto cross, the competitors are getting younger and younger due to the fact that their inhabitions and rational thoughts are less but ill hazard a guess that the injuries in the sport due to this are alot higher.

this theory is not an assumption, it has proven to me over the last 12 years of teaching and the issues involved in teaching a child versus teaching an adult

Really? Which one? I don't get many chances to go to the stores around you smile.gif I love a good excuse though.
malaga aquariums, i offer my free services there and help bag fish ect all the time when i am in the store, also non sponsor stores as well

WHAT I would REALLYYYYY like to see on this forum is the location of the sale in the title. wish it was mandatory, it takes me hours of reading just to find almost everyone is miles away.lol
It would be so much easier!

Most people have their "real" locations in their profile.. If you look at/in their profile, you'll know where they are (most times). tongue.gif

I agree with you that this may be true for many people, however you have not really answered the question. You cannot determine anything by a person's listed age. You can make assumptions, but there is no way, given only a person's listed age, that you could know if they are a child prodigy with an intelligence far greater than your own or the complete opposite. Your personal experiences and opinion are exactly that, personal experiences and opinion; they are not necessarily true for the entire population.

It is my opinion that being told the age of a person would not contribute to the manner in which I treat somebody that I am buying from or selling to, and as such it is unnecessary information. We are not going to apply age limits to the classifieds without raising membership fees to pay for the employment of a paid moderator, because the workload would be simply too much to ask of any volunteer.

being a 15 year old, i think age does play a part as us teenagers tend to think we know more about everything than everyone else, through this forum, i have learned to stop impulse posting on things i know nothing about and only give advice on topics i know about and/or have had experience with. and the topic about buying and selling, i'm usually very upfront with my sale, and always organise them (or try hard too) i did rush a sale once, and the buyer wasnt too impressed (sorry clay) i know a couple of the younger forum members and i'm not impressed with their organization/attitudes and information etc, i am with clay on this one and think people should actually be HONEST and put in their actual age and location, there's nothing fun about getting excited about finding something you've been looking for, then proceeding to call the seller only to find out they actually live 1-2 hours away instead of 30 mins... i think it's just fair to the older members to have some sort of idea who they are dealing with, and what to expect.

just my 2 cents smile.gif

Think that would cut a couple hours off if you live in Two rocks?
smile.gif

This thread is wayyyy off track anyway...
so thats my addition to the original subject of should peoples ages be displayed...or something of that nature...

Have a good night!

its dissapointing that the topic at hand, ages of members and subsiquent restrictions upon minors, has been trully diminished and has turned into a constitutional crap fight. the development of the topic to the protection of minors was my intentional purpose.

but on the other hand this must be a pcs record for number of posts on a thread in such a short amount of time tongue.gif

if the forum is supplied through good will then, as i understand it, the pcs is under no way responsible for profits gained by associate members through the classifieds otherwise, if i am incorrect, does this meen that all profits made by members would have to be returned to the pcs as the forum uses the name of the pcs? then does that meen that the association of the forum to the club links it by default? not my strong point but it is interesting.....

Poll has been added. This is purely for stats and may have little bearing on any final decisions to be made.

For what its worth, here's my opinion.
My age, religion, racial background even my political affiliation is 'no-ones buisness' unless I choose to divulge it, or it is forced upon me by law.

If political correctness becomes a part of this forum then I for one shall remove myself from it.
In relation to minors and their safety whilst using this 'open' forum, are we bound by duty of care?
