Why is it not covered under warranty? If you bought it new from the LFS, and suddenly a few days/weeks later it stopped working, then it SHOULD be covered under warranty!
The only time when something electrical is not covered under warranty is when the consumer (or fish) breaks it (not a manufacturing fault). Even a $10 electrical product at K-mart has 12 months warranty.

I'm pretty sure the packaging on the Jager heater states that it has a 3 year warranty.

The only time a heater (or any item with non-moving parts) is not covered under its stated warranty is usually when it is tempered with, when it is clear that it was not used for its intended purpose or when it was broken by the user.

to me it just looked like it had a burn mark on one spot of the glass tube about half way down

I had a similar problem with mine but the lfs replaced it with no dramas and it's been fine for a few years now

U didnt mention how old the first one was.

I faintly remembering reading about issues after people recalibrating their heaters. Have a shot at searching for some older threads on this topic.

i try to buy the older model (still some around) and never touch the calibration dial. ever. just use a thermometer to set the temperature. i have to add 8 to mine to get the right temp... ie if u want 28 degrees set it on 20. but its been going strong for six or so years, its not hard to get the temp right once you know how far off the thermostat is.

90 bucks is not market rate, get price closer to 60 bucks and if on special at one of the sponsors can be had for less.
I've never touched the calibration adjustment on mine and it is 3 years old
Its in a custom DIY heater guard so no fish can bang it around. This is a must if the fish are 6inches or bigger I reckon.
