can get up to 70cm disc for females males usually stay smaller 6x18x18 will be fine till 25cm-30cm disc 6x2x2 is fine till they reach around 45cm-50cm disc then need wider tank
tankmate nuthing to small or the rays will eat them and nothing that will harras the rays like fin nippers and fish that will suck on it like plecos and sometimes flagtails will try and suck on the back of the rays
sara and bichirs are fine

I know *NOTHING* about them so take this purely as it is intended - a question - but would you really consider a tank only 5-10cm wider than the disc to be "fine" for these rays? Maybe it's just my lack of understanding but that to me just seems REALLY cramped..

You would want 3 ft wide tank definatly for long term there was a few 5x3x2.5s around I think vebas have a second hand one ATM.

The few people I saw with them kept them in a 1ft deep 4x8 ft pond. Inside a temp regulated fish shed.

But these where still pups really about 8" in size.

Once they got to 20" I'd say you'd need something more like 2 ft deep 12x6ft.

The problem with these is most people kill them before they get very big at all and part of the problem is starting out with too smaller home.

The plan to upgrade as they grow is all very well but finding another 2-3k to upgrade every 6-12 months isn't always as simple as one might hope.

Yeah from the little I've read about and seen of them I would have thought an indoor pond/lagoon type setup specifically designed around the needs of the ray (eg mostly open bottom, soft substrate, a couple of low/wide places for them to hide, etc) far better suited than any typical aquarium..

Yeh the few times I saw them in the flesh the owners had learned the hard way about aquariums and motoro's

both had setup fairly big plastic ponds in sheds. They are totally gorgeous animals and I really can see the appeal would love some myself, there is a surprising number around even in WA but interestingly I've never seen one bigger than 10".

Lovely animal but highly impractical.

I am aware of Reticulated, Leopoldi etc but have also heard of teacup / dwarf rays?
Are they an available species?

Im thinking now motoro maybe to big for an inhouse feature tank............

Try Steve @ Tucanare, he also has a shop in rockingham. If he can't help I'm sure he can point you in the right direction.

Failing that seaview had some last year, they might be able to help.

thats a tricky one... i dont think they exactly pop up on the lists, and you would probably have to pay up front if they could find one somehow.

We have been advised by the 2 main wholesalers in Australia that they wont be getting any in at this present time as Motoros are very close to being put on the non allowable import list. They dont want to take the risk of getting some and then being caught out with them if the laws change . Which they say could happen anytime.
