Does anyone with keeping Aussie-PNG "rainbows" know if keeping purple spotted gudgeons`(one at the moment and 2 empire gudgeons`), think it a risk having these in with small species of rainbows? I had 3 or 4 blue neons`that are only a couple of cm`s and i`m down to 1 now and not having seen any dead fish floating or being scavenged by catfish, i`m thinking in particular the purple spotted are knocking these off. The spotted is around 7-8 cm`s in length. I have a large colony of "rainbows" now in a 6` planted tank. what`s your opinion please? Murray.

This should be in the ANGFA section of the forum.

Empire gudgeons are peaceful and should be fine with rainbows.

Purple spotted gudgeons can be quite aggressive and should not be put with small fish.

Have a look on Aqua Green - they have info about both species. (Google Aqua Green and click on "Catalogue")

FYI - go talk to Chris at Aquotix (Saj on PCS). They have a display tank at Aquotix with a small empire and some rainbows.

In my experience with purple spots they will eat anything that can fit in their mouth and if they are happy they will breed like rabbits. This is when the real problems begin as they are fiercely territorial and will guard their egg patch with quite a bit of vigor.

Thanks for that. Sounds like i`m fortunate to only have the 1 (purple spotted) in the tank. I`m seriously thinking about removing it and passing it on. Regards. Murray.
