Strength and longevity... I want it to be overkill and want to build it once and not have to replace it for at least 15-20 years. Also to have the same overkill in pine I'd have to use thicker wood, and especially going 4 tier we can't afford to sacrifice the height . We tested a piece of raw American oak by submerging it (with an airstone running) in salt water for 4 weeks. There was only swelling of a couple of mm and you could only scratch 1mm or so into the wood even though it looked sodden - the structural strength seemed pretty much undiminished. The stands we use have a few coats of polyurethane, are also waxed and will be sitting on 6-8mm PVC "feet" to keep the wood away from any water on the floor, I expect moisture to not be any issue and will recoat every couple of years anyway. This is actually the first "complete" system that I have replaced since taking over the business, so I am pretty excited to see how it works out.
The stands were made by the same factory that makes all our cabinet and wooden stand range. We can certainly make these to order, as well as getting full cabinets done in oak (and will probably bring a couple of stock 6x2 and 4x2 "high end" cabinet sets over in our next order to see if they sell.) These are by no means cheap, I was lucky to get mine when the factory was ordering in a 40' container of oak for another customers order (regular furniture) so got a better rate on the timber than otherwise would have been possible. We will have 4 more of the freshwater stand (4 tier and 3 wide to take 12 x 800mm x 650mm x 400mm tanks - weighs 210kg) coming in the next shipment as they messed the numbers up. To give you a rough idea on pricing we'd probably retail one of these for around $2800 - although would look at doing them significantly cheaper as they are a stuff up. Lead time on ordering these (and any other custom pine cabinet/stand) can be up to a few months at times depending on what other orders are coming over.

Certainly looks the biz, now I just have to work out how to build that at home for 10K instead of 300... Hmmm :-S

It's been 3.5 months since I did the jackhammering and the bones in my fingers still hurt.... although at least not as much as they used to. Was a lot more than 10k, but thankfully a lot less than 300k
