Fish Shed Questions

You've seen my fish house. Walls are 16mm MDF, 50mm Poly & 16mm MDF, ceiling is 50mm poly, in 50mm square timber studwork.
I fitted a Mistral Reverse Cycle Air-con, which was an "overkill" and a complete waste of time & money. I only used the cooling twice last year & only once this year so far. It cost me $300, then $400 for fitting and a heap of hassle as Mistral are useless.
I have not needed to use the unit for heating yet.
I have 300 watt heaters in a couple of tanks, that with the heat from 2 large air-pumps & the 2 x 4ft flouros and that is enough.
All through last winter the temp' did not go below 23 °C.
I try to keep the catfish etc in the bottom tanks as they are a bit cooler.
Tip...The air loses it's temp' much quicker than water does. So the bigger volume of water you have the less heating you will need.
Hope this helps...if not give me a call.

Hey Dazza - werdna has been giving me a hand (more like just drinking all my beer and working out how to use a measuring tape ) to put up a gyprock wall on the rear of my garage. The span was just under 6 metres and 2.4 metres high. So far it has cost me about $500 but I still have to put two doors on and give it a lick of paint on one side. The money has been in the double door frame ($180) and I lined one wall with plywood rather than gyprock for a better look ($30 per sheet times 3 compared to $9 for gyprock, plus $70 for the varnish). The main materials you need are dirt cheap. I went with CSR and they were pretty good even though the sales clerk left me with one extra gyprock sheet and short two studs - still much more helpful than Bunnings! I would say it is much easier than retrofitting a prefabricated tin shed and with a bit of thought you can custom it to fit whatever size and shape you want rather than going with a standardised size.

Poncho - I take a whole day off work with one days notice to help you, drive you all over the country getting supplies, build a wall for you in a day using recycled tek screws! and you still cant get over one little 100mm measurement mistake... Sheesh!!!
When we build my shed while drinking copious amounts of my alcohol trying to remember what the bubble thing was for... the tape measure is going to stay in your possession, and just one mistake on your behalf...!!!
The sales clerk must have included the two studs building the wall and forgot they are not the same!

I do like Steve's idea about going for a cool room but what are the costs? Where can I source a complete kit (no motor needed)?
Someone also suggested the portable, demountable type buildings. Anyone know where to source used ones?
Really need to get this project underway ASAP as I'm struggling for space in my house.

if your looking for a portable type then look in the west for mining/surplus autions like ross"s or smith broughtons they handle that sort of stuff or in the sunday times readers mart at the back around the machinery section
hope that can help

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I can source Cool Room Kits and get a price ASAP rather than waiting on quotes?

Have a word with Tony. He has just bought some "Cool room" panels for his fish-house.
If you call round Sat morning you can see them......and give us a hand to finish it off.

If you end up going with a shed give Kalamunda Iceworks a call as they have new and second hand insulation panels apparently.
Ive been doing some googling.....might have some options for you soon

All out of reach for my budget IMO. As a comparison I can get a 3mx6m (or two 3mx3m) colourbond shed for under $2000. Surely it won't cost much more to insulate??
A second-hand coolroom is the other option but I'm having difficulty sourcing one.......

Any leads to an insulation crowd appreciated. The foil stuff mentioned earlier sounds good.

Are you going to be insulating it yourself? Or you want a crowd to install it for you?
If you are doing it yourself when Brett and I built his wall we got insulation from CSR Gyprock and I dont think it was too expensive... I think $35 and that covered heaps. Ask Brett, he would know better, I left that side of it to him
Just stay away from Bunnings! Unless you like spending double what you should!

not sure what this cost , but please remember if done correctly ( insulation ) it will pay for itself in a few winters . i strongly suggest you research "sprayable insulation"
Cheers

It wasnt the alfoil lined stuff.
But if you went in there they would probably stock the kind you are after.
Make sure you post photos of your progress... I am sure alot of people (like me) would LOVE to learn from your mistakes!
