But I've never done shrimp before and intrigued
I was browsing scumtree and seen some for as much as $300 each
How hardy what special items do I need filtration etc
Would be looking at a 6x2x2

6x2x2 is a large tank for shrimp
don't waste your time with the rip off merchants on gumtree
just put up a WTB ad on the classifieds section
I used to have ninja shrimp and cherries years back, but found them to be boring
With the department of fisheries being so interested in shrimp, I wouldn't be keen on getting any again.
Ninja shrimp were an awesome source of live food for my cichlid fry though
With filtration, make sure it's shrimp safe (e.g.: sponge over the filter intake etc.)
Cherries and Ninjas are very hardy, but your fancy shrimp like Crystal Reds etc are not so hardy
best of luck!

Might be best starting with some low grade stock for the experience.

Anyways it would look nice
As for keeping shrimp
Must keep stable temps easy with a big tank! (Very hard with a small tank)
Can't keep Predatorily fish or any fish with a mouth bigger than a neon tetra
If you add fish you won't see the shrimp as much they will hide
If your thinking about buying a couple of $300 shrimp throwing them in a 6 footer then stat selling them it doesn't work like that
Shrimp are selectively bred to achieve the quality of the shrimp worth $300+

I find whiptails go well with shrimp, except that you can never raise any of the whiptail fry. I rather suspect the shrimp eat them. Anyway, the shrimp are not scared of whiptails.
