The fish sold in Australia as common Plecos are Pterygoplichthys multiradiatus, the real Pleco Hypostomus plecostomus is very rare in this country, I have seen 2 in the last 20 years. Count the rays in your "plecos" dorsal fin, it will have 13 rays the real pleco has 8.

Hi guys,
the real P. gibbiceps is easy to recognize with its giant rounded dorsal fin. I have just briught out a new publication with 20 new and rediscovered loricarids, also amazing Pterygoplichthys species.
