Quite a while ago there was a discussion on different kinds of sands. Someone brought up river sand from soil outlets. I can not find this discussion and am looking for who recommended it. I am finding it very difficult to get the stuff clean (crystal clear water). If you were that person or have used this sand can u please reply to this thread.

Thanks Peter

I prefer to use the river sand as it gives you different sized particles, which to my mind make it look more realistic. I've always just washed it as best I could and accept that some of the fines will cloud the tank for a short time.

Thanks for the thread post hlokk it was very informative (similar to what i have been doing). I too enjoy the look of this sand Adam and this is why i am going thru the effort of cleaning it as much as possible. I was a lil worried it may contain sumthn harmful for my fish but as you have used it i have no need to worry. I hopefully wont have the problem of the fine particles as i have sifted through two large bags of it. Since this is for my large americans, i really had no choice but to get rid of it or face the prospect of dirty water everytime an oscar made a swift move towards the sand.

Does aussie filter sand look like that? I went to a pool store and i coudlnt see inside the bag. However i did see some spilt sand in the storage area of these bags and it looker greyer and larger. Does anyone recommend a brand (if there is more than one brand available)?

Thanks for the suggestions.
