They're pretty small for grunters but typically aggressive. A mate of mine kept them for a while up north. You probably wont find them but if you do they will most likely be quite small. Being a grunter the similarities to your coal grunter might make it a target.

Most Grunters don't like direct competitors. There are exceptions there's a bunch of different grunters out there some of them very different and there are methods to reduce aggression... Same as cichlids.
Barred Grunters are omnivores and will probably have a crack at your plants too though.

Damn. No Barred Grunters then, might give the Bar Tail Grunters a try at some point though. Would w/c from the Swan treated with a couple of meds be ok? Or would it be better to get them from AI?

Dunno, what species are you referring to?
Only grunters I know of in the Swan are marine/estuarine and certainly not recommended for FW tanks.
