Ive had queenfish and giant trevally follow a lure as its flying through the air overhead and in some cases jump out of the water and eat it just before it hits the surface. Pretty safe to say their vision is pretty damn good. I would assume that predatory fish would have better eyesight than grazers although they would still need to be alert of predators so would have to have decent vision too.

Reminds me of my childhood catching wild fish and keeping them in aquariums, loving it!

I have a bunch of them happily living and breeding in a small (100l max) water bowl in my garden and they survive all year round from freezing winter nights to the bloody thing almost drying out in summer and the remaining puddle being like a lukewarm bath, also my dog using it as a constant water source. They are bloody tough as nails and you will struggle to kill them. Did try putting some pygmy perch in with the pygmys once and I found them all dead the following days with no fins, they may not play well with tank mates smaller than them or maybe they just have something against pygmy perch...
Can confirm they will absolutely eat string algae.

Jules i also use that method, i turn my canister off but leave the lower powerhead on and turn the top powerhead on once the water is refilled. I add my prime to the water before filling and then another small dose after and let the powerheads circulate the water for 10 minutes prior to turning the canister back on. Water is usually crystal clear and I've never had a problem with filter cultures dying off as a result. Pays to be anal about these things!

If you're in cannington go and see aquotix, they would be able to fabricate you a 7ft tank no worries and do a bloody great job too. Well worth the money spent, you'll also have the benefit of their advice and supporting a local business.
