There was a 3 car police chase this morning on leach hwy and the guy they were after brushed up against my car and took off, doing some significant damage to the front end of my car. unfortunately I wasn't able to get his rego. My insurance company says I have to pay the excess ( unfortunately I choose the highest excess $500 ), they also claim that even if I did get the rego and it turned out to be a stolen vehicle then once again they cannot waive the excess as they need the person's name who was driving at the time. So if the police failed to apprehend the guy I'm left with the bill :(

going to get some quotes tomorrow but not liking the situation.

You haven't exactly been left with a bill? When you took out the policy you agreed to pay the first $500 of any claim. When full third party details are provided, as a good will gesture to the client, the insurer will waive the policy excess. There is no requirement for them to do this until a full recovery has been made, so really they are the good guys.

I do empathize with you but just be thankful you took out insurance, otherwise you would be left with a real bill!

My advice would be to contact the police and lodge a crash report. Give your insurer a call and advise them of the report number and ask them politely to try and obtain the third parties details from the police. FYI - the red tape around this is very long so expect to be waiting a while before the police release the information to the insurer, that's if they have anything to release besides the Rego.

what a load of crap, insurances are good, but are right pricks to deal and work with when it comes to owing money.

I hope for your sake bud it works out well.

I had an incident where I only had 3rd party and some morron merged into me but said I merged into him. took 2 months for his insurance to pay, and I had to get 3 witnesses (who were on my side) to sign and write a letter and all this crap, such a hassle!

Just a side note - i do not work for an insurance company, so please don't think i am siding with them! in fact i work at an insurance brokerage so i actually spend most of my day arguing with the guy/girl you spoke to on the phone today, so it's not in my nature to agree with them!

well the murdoch police station are being very helpful, the chase was apparently going on for a long time this morning and this guy has cleaned up some other cars too on his rampage. So its taking a while for them to get all the information together. no info on whether the driver was caught.

all my experiences with car insurance has been good... if someone else is at fault and you get rego (followed by the owners name from police) generally thats all the insurance company needs to take them to court to pay if they dont play ball....

when the owner/driver of the vehicle has no insurance , no money and no job and only debt thats when things could end up nasty... but if you have car insurance then they take this debt on on your behalf and chase them to the worlds end :)

gonna invest in a dash cam one of these days... great evidence if some clown hits you :)

cheers, unfortunately at the time when i spoke to my insurance company i did not have a preferred repairer so they sent me to one of theirs.

finally got in touch with the detective who was part of the chase and he was happy to speak to my insurance company about the incident as they have now arrested the offender. So hopefully the insurance company should now have all the info they need.

well got a call from the insurance company today saying that even though the police have provided all the required info, recovering the funds from the offender is going to take a "long" time. so i do have to pay the excess after all. although i think i will leave it be as the the smash repair place said it would cost well over 3k to fix my car  :o  oh well...even though i have no fault in this i have to pay $550 for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. ( btw, i was on my way to vebas that morning )

One time it took my insurance nearly 10 years to get my excess back from the party at fault. You may get it back, but it will take an age.
