Bristlenose, like most catfish, will make breeding extremely difficult in a tank, save for maybe live bearers and mouth brooding cichlids. They will seek out eggs laid on any surface or any surface dwelling young.

Umm, no.  Bristlenose will be harmless to pretty well any cichlid you want to breed or their fry . Certainly any mouthbrooder, which is most africans.

The problem goes the other way. Pretty well anything will eat new bristlenose fry, so don't count on getting many BN fry if they are breeding

so will the male not fan off the eggs to protect them? so i couldn't breed rams or apistos? maybe even have a planted tank with shrimp and guppys/endlers and mollies? or discus/angelfish?

My bristlenose are constantly breeding in my mixed african/American cichlid display. Obviously a lot die but I'd estimate 10 live from each batch live. When rocks are stacked in each other it gives plenty of places that cichlids can't reach the eggs or fry

My ph is constantly 8.2, they seem fine. Must be fine if they are breeding. If your wanting productivity I would not recommend it but those that don't get eaten grow miles faster then those in my 4foot bn tank
