for planted tank you will need good lighting, rich nutrient substrate and co2

either tank will look good, it just depends on how you aquascape it

Man im a planted tank dud but im lazy and dont really spend anything to maintain the plantedness. Do you want to go all out or do you want to do it on the cheap? Might help people give you relevant advice.

I've had great results with a thin bottom layer of laterite clay, then whatever other substrate on top (I've got riversand as that's my aesthetic). Vebas sells good value laterite-type red clay for not much money and it works well. Dosing CO2 is useful for plant nutrition and also keeping algae down... but don't overdose (especially in hot weather). As for ferts and light, depends on your plants. Choose ones that are easy care and plant cuttings as they grow out. You'll appreciate the investment of decent lights though.
Laterite is messy though, make sure its properly covered with your upper substrate and add water SLOWLY! Otherwise you'll have billowing clouds of red suspension. Whatever sand you use on top, make sure you wash is clear of any dust before use.
