Well after 2 months of running various tanks and 2 months after finding this forum and then managing to get some form of income it's easily worth it. All you need to do is this about how much you spend. The $25 is saved easy.

I browse the forums all the time as it is the only decent local aquaria forums, but I have always been miffed (not at anyone, just the situation) that it is primarily a cichlid forum. I know there are 'other fish' sections, but they seem like an afterthought. As I am much more into my other fish (getting rid of my malawis as we speak), I feel that PCS has little to offer me. I would join in a heartbeat if this site/the club were more about all aquarium fish.
I see that there is such a thing as The Aquarium Society of WA - but do you think googling yields anything? Do they even have a site?

If Perth has non-specialised aquaria forums hidden somewhere, and they are as well-organised and frequently trafficked as here, somebody please point me in the right direction!

Gday Pisceoz

Other societies in WA actually have their own forum/sections here at the PCS.

Community and Planted Tank Discussion - This Forum is moderated by the Aquarium Society of WA

ANGFA Perth - A forum for the discussion of native fish moderated by the Perth branch of the Australian & New Guinea Fishes Association

Just wondering if you have been to a monthly meet as yet? We cover all sorts of topics, some of the more recent ones have been -

tank building
discus (presented by Heiko Bleher) - http://www.perthcich...showtopic=24700
fish health
water chemistry
breeding catfish
aquarium plants
home-made fish food

As you can see they cover broad range of fish keeping areas not just cichlids smile.gif

EDIT - also give http://www.aquariumlife.com.au a go if you haven't already done so. They're national but there's plenty of Perthies that have planted and community tanks there too.

I don't keep cichlids anymore and have not in several years yet I joined. The meetings are not always about cichlids as Daz said. Granted financial membership is not required to attend but if everyone thought no point in becoming a club member then these meetings would not be able to happen.

Not to mention the auctions - Plenty of fish are up for grabs that are not cichlids.

If you use the forums on a regular basis then imo you should join as a club member to support the club, as without the membership fees then the forums would not exist.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm just curious why 'other fish' etc are subsections of a cichlid forum? I can see that being 'perthcichlid' and not say, 'perthaquaria' might drive non-cichlidophiles away smile.gif
Hey, I could be wrong. I frequently am! Haha.

Will think becoming a club member over. It's pretty cheap, and I have already made some great contacts in the industry, some of whom post and/or are sponsors. I would LOVE to attend meetings, but with 3 kids, and on a school night... yeah.

My thoughts are: If anyone enjoys this forum and benefits from the advice etc. from it, then $25 a year is more than worth it..
It's equivalent to 3 BigMac meals a year..

Come along for the next one if you can, It an auction, great start to the meetings and the club. And you always pick up a bargain or two.

I pay my membership as I like to support the club.
I think the meetings are a great way to meet new people and share some stories.

Hope to see you there.

Cheers

Nah the printing of cards, cutting, laminating, printing/folding member letters, printing of envelopes, adding stamps only uses up about half the time. The rest is spent updating the database and preparing the merge (which is used to fill out the fields on the cards and envelopes).

All done at the same time as getting distracted by the forum, chat room and girlfriend in my ear wink.gif

I am a member of Aquarium Society and of ANGFA, Aquarium Life, Shrimp Keepers Forum etc. Those cover my interests well, PCS seems to have the majority of Perths foot traffic irregardless of Cichlid relatedness of the post so I use it as a 'News' stand of Perth fish keeping as it were.

if anyone spends more then $250 a year at ANY of the sponsors then membership here is worth it and helps support a local club that helps hobbyists in a large way and provides a support and help network.

Hey guys, Have you ever thought of joining but keep putting it off. DON'T. for just $25 a year even less when you buy a multiple year membership you get 10% off at all of our sponsors and a free raffle ticket at club meetings to win a great prize. Just think buying a new $400 tank you save $40 (saves you more than a 1 year membership) which can go towards even more great stuff. So stop putting it off and sign up today.

Cheers Cam
