Hi all. I'm planning on setting up one of my spare tanks I have into a tank to try and grow amazon swords which got me thinking what else could be happy in the tank and thought ottos will be great as they will keep my plants clean at the same time.

Are they easy to breed? What do they require to breed? How many would you need?

I had a group of about 5-6 in a small planted tank. They bred a few times and I manage to raise a few fry. The fry are very small so I would say you wouldn't want any fish in with them. I wasn't trying to breed them so I would say they aren't to hard to breed:)

I WAS trying to breed them and found them rather challenging... to my patience. In hindsight it was probably because I didn't take my eyes away from the aquarium for 5 months and faffed about endlessly with plants, high lighting and trying to instigate some action with "internet advice" Rain water water changes/temperature swings/facing north at the winter solstice with an apple in my mouth etc etc. When I stopped faffing with the plants and reduced the lighting and disturbances, maintaining it in a basic fashion then off they went.
