oday was the first time we added dipping with the usual bird and flower hunt.
I didn't really know where to go.
We went to three locations on the Helena River, off the Ridley Road and the West Talbot Road.
First lesson: red algae=no life as we know it!
Second and third locations were lower down the same creek but in faster moving water with sand or gravel beds. No fish, but lots of micro critters. Some tiny shrimp, some red bloodworms, dragonfly larvae, ?copepods? (little round things). Not exciting for experienced dippers, but great for us today.
The main thing is I got my husband interested and next time we go out bushwalking he'll be happy to plan some more wet areas in the day.
