Cant be any worse environmentally than wild caught cichlids or the tons of wild caught marines.
who knows what will be living in it though.

Sustainability, sustainability, sustainability.
Thats why its illegal.
"But if I can get away with it, whats the big deal?" You can get away with much worst but would you try?
"But I'm only taking a few rocks". And then the next person only takes a few, and the one after that, and the one after that....
Have you ever seen Methams Beach in November? hundreds of people fishing for abalone. But image if each person had the same idea that "it wasnt too bad" to take a few abalone that are undersize, the entire reef would be decimated.
For the sake of the reef. Leave the rock were it is. Support your hobby, support the enviroment and buy some from your local marine specialist but not from Gumtree, where do you think they get it from? Sort of like a blood diamond really.

As for location maybe Yanchep lagoon.
As far as sustainability... Nothing about wild collection is sustainable really.

So instead of me going out and collecting live rock your saying i should leave it up to the fish shops to do it so they can charge me an arm and a leg for a bit of rock? if anything them going out in boats is damaging the reefs more than me considering the reefs i would be going to are closer to shore where far less marine life lives. I've attached a thread of people talking about it and they don't seem to worry about your so called "sustainability". If your so worried about me taking a few rocks maybe you should start opening your eyes and having a look at real problems that reefs face today.
also i dont see hundreds of poeple at the beach collecting live rock.... i understand what your saying but its a tad different?

Ummm, ok, murder is illegal, but fudge it, there are 7b people on this planet. What difference is one less person in the scheme of things?
You want negativity taken elsewhere? Take your illegal recommendations elsewhere.

That forum post is a 10 years old. Like they said in it, check with fisheries before you go do it, as I think their rules would be different now.
Maybe go have a look at the place they have been harvesting the live rock and look at the impact it has made?
If your trying to save money on liverock then maybe you can't really afford a Marine tank anyway?
I imagine the cost of live rock is due to the weight of sending it around, as well as quality of it.

Pointless at any rate local rock is limestone based so why go to the effort to illegal collect live rocks at the risk of prosecution only to kill all the life on it
Just use some limestone from the dry part of the beach for the same effect with much less work and risk
