for sump ideas look here http://www.melevsree...allmysumps.html
as for lighting what are you trying to achieve? full reef, FOWLR, predator?
Are you going to run chemical filtration?
are you going to have a skimmer?

sump size depends on what you want to run in it - skimmer, dsb, fuge, reactors, frag racks etc (bigger the better imo)

do your research
buy the best quality equipment you can afford
always over cater on equipment specs ie: pump flow rates, skimmer size etc
always have water on hand; storage in IBC's or ble 220L's
use rodi water for evap top off (not tap or filtered)
get around and see as many system first hand as you can - also view on web sites and forums with tank journals
ask heaps of questions

if you have the money initially go for led lighting, they are superior in the fact they dont require new globes every 6-9 months and use less power.
Buy the best you can afford, if you do cheap out it will bite you on the ass one way or another.

bit over kill you only need to have the sump turnover around 5 times an hour. Though it is nice to be able to run all your other things off of it eg reactors, chiller etc.

For sumo, get as big as you can fit under the tank. Remember if the power goes out all the water above the pipes running from the tank will drain into your sump. Bigger the better
