Great looking tank mate. Nice big black tang, nice blue below the dorsal. There is a big one at Vebas at the moment, i'd buy it straight away if my tank was set up.

I am setting up a large reef in the next 12 months, once I move into my house. Have considered cutting a couple holes in the roof for some sun domes to supplement with natural lighting.

I am also setting up a 3 foot reef soon...

This is great guys... Spreading the reef bug on PCS.

KV- do you have problems with the tangs and butterfly pecking at the corals?

Don't do it mate. The algae goes ballistic it's so hard to control.

That is true,,,, but if it can be shut of with remote control luvres between double glazing,,, then for viewing purposes it would be great.
So much stands out with sunlight illumination.

What kind of algae was it growing? coralline or nuisance algae?

That is what I was thinking, remote controlled luvres. Have seen a few tanks on reefcentral, looks amazing. I'd supplement the lighting with T5's,LEDs and Halides. I just love the way natural light makes fish look.

being on your patio, was the entire tank exposed to the sun?

It was the kind that was a pain, corals went crazy, the tank got full sun it he morning then not a lot after 10am. Lol in my **** lol I have foged clear panels in the roof and it grows a little diatoms algae. Full sun will Kill Acros or Bleach them in tanks they need some shading from it.

Thanks for the heads up mate, will have to look into natural lighting a little more. What lighting are you using now that you have moved your tank? I had a 8x2 reef that was pretty low tech a few years back, I only ran 4x 400w metal halides with no supplement lighting. Never had a problem growing any corals, although my stocking density was relatively low, so was probably the reason I got away with no calcium reactor, kalk etc.

Been looking into LEDs but far too many mixed results at this stage of the technology. Seems DIY LEDs are generally the best at this stage. I don't want to fork out 5k + to light my tank only to find out that they are no good. Will probably go with metal halides and T5 supplementation, old technology, but technology that works. Will need solar panels on the roof to keep me from going broke paying for power though.
