Hey everyone sorry for spamming the forum with all my questions, but my brother has a planted tank (64 Liters) and it will have sand but of course can't have it being dug up all the time! So he want a small Cichlid that can go with plants in a 64 I told him apistogramma but he is being a stubborn little kid like normal!

If it is well filtered Apisto may be OK. Hardy species like Macmasteri and only 1 pair.

The above mention of Rams is a better option if not a medium to advanced aquarium keeper. Apistos are very finicky at times and small changes in water parameters and tank conditions can be harmful.

Yes Paul ok I know you have them! You always do! I might have to ask my brother first! But the balloons seem cool, personally it's long fins they amazing!

personally not a fan of the deliberate physical mutation of the shape of fish. This is why we do not stock any balloon forms of any species (except goldfish, even with these we do not sell anything more mutated than a black moor). Long fins on the other hand can look pretty cool.

Just sold most of my rams, still a few locals & some germans, but mainly the girls. Have some awesome apistos, but again most have already sold, the trifasciata were truly spectacular.

Oh I didn't know balloons were a mutation I just though they were selectively bred! Well how much would some long find be? I don't know if he want to breed them just yet!

I have been breeding both rams (electric blues) and apistos. If I were to choose one, I would pick an apistos. Tank bred apistos are not any harder to keep than rams. In my hands, I find rams die easier than apistos. Apistos, especially when breeding and when they are looking after fry, are a delight to observe. The fry form a tight cloud around mum, unlike rams which only form a loose cloud around the parents. Main downside of apisto is that they can be aggressive, both in the nonbreeding (to conspecifics) and breeding states(to all fish). While you can easily keep 6 rams in a 60L tank, you can only keep a pair of apistos.

Good luck but they are both good choices if you are into dwarf cichlids.

Do you think I will have to buy a colony of 6 apistogramma and see which ones pair off or can I just buy a pair? I had 4 agazazzi in the tank but they died from wood toxicity! Yes I'm young, but I'm smarter than you think!

They aren't cheap fish...I would buy a pair unless you plan to keep them in a heavily planted 4 foot tank

I had 4 doubles I think, they were about $30 each, and all died from wood! It sucked I spent about $300-$500 on a community tank lost $200 from an ammonia spike and $120 worth in agazazzi then traded the rest in which obviously would get me $150+ so I have lost a lot of money! Plus I'm buying about $600 worth of tangs soon so I'm not making much seeing as I'm 14! But my ngara Flametails colony are going well, breeding at an amazing pace quite proud of myself!

Nah not right now we need some time to settle everything down, because my brother lost about $200-$300 in fish from wood toxicity, we removed it did a couple of water changes and need to see it really settle down, we have some brichardi, (princess cichlids) in there just to see if the water quality is getting better! But should be getting some ran in a month or two!

I believe that Robs Aquariums in Malaga sell Balloon Rams from time to time

If you're after some different dwarf cichlids, I have a male nigeria red for $30 or a breeding pair of occellated kribs for $80
