Gday Japes

Can u explain your filter setup? In particular what's in the top left and right of this pic.

Daz

Hi Dazza,

To be completely honest the filtration setup on this tank is terrible. It filters well but ease of maintenance and "polish" is lacking. It's was initially filtered by canisters but I decided to sump it for more mechanical filtration. Due to the height of the tank, even good canister filtration with nice mechanical setups would struggle with collection of particle/suspended matter. Access to the sides and back are incredibly limited, and there was not enough space behind the tank to use any overflow boxes we could find, so we followed plans to make a DIY PVC overflow which basically creates a siphon, sucking from the water surface down a 50mm pipe into a 25mm pipe. The outlet is cheap and nasty at the moment as you can see, but its angled to agitate the surface (even though wet/dry chamber of the sump would provide adequate aeration) as well as pushing water around the lower levels of the tank, most importantly without moving sand. It was initially pretty clean, and functioned quite well - noise has always been a bit of an issue, but now that paint has started wearing off it's just straight up ugly.

In hindsight this was ridiculous, but budget concerns and being too lazy to empty the tank and drill it at the time caused me to end with this system. You'll be happy to know that within the next month I plan to empty, flip, properly drill, and re-plumb the whole tank, as well as grabbing a new return pump and plumbing it to a neat little FX5 return nozzle setup.

No worries. Cheers for the detailed reply smile.gif

Yeah the angle pvc outlet caught my eye. How about the cable tied net / mesh on the left? Is that just a protective cover for the inlet or does wsit have another purpose?

It's gutterguard around the piping and I've got Java Moss growing in and around it to try and cover up the PVC coming through the missing paint. Also covers the intakes so I don't have any wayward Tetra in the sump.
