I suppose the mindset is to treat the fishes as food... and I think it does help to have the fishes in an outdoor tank such that you are looking down on it... I think it would be more difficult if you had it in an aquarium such that you are looking at its side and its eyes... hence never socialise or play with the fishes you want to eat, and don't give them names...
Yes, Thalium, it is from my AP setup... I believe I have 20 more to go...

How big was the barra when you first got it Ivan?

Initially I thought they would have been 3-4cm but looking through past photos seem to point to about 10cm when I first got them... so you can say that they have roughly tripled in size in about 4 months...

I think there are also constraints/rules for selling fishes to someone as food, so will not be considering that... but they are pretty good tasting
when fresh, so will consider keeping them again next season...

Short answer nope... As far as I know, salt content of 3ppt is the maximum concentration you would want to still support most plant and/or vegetable growth... I think slightly higher is possible but some crops may suffer and not perform too well... In fact, some home-made weed killer ideas recommend using salt/vinegar to kill weeds, I would expect that the salt does have adverse effect on the plants...
But maybe a slightly higher content is possible (not seawater content of 33 to 35 ppt) but maybe below 10ppt... but one would need to investigate what plants would grow to still be able to call it an aquaponics setup...

What was the flesh like? The reason I ask is farmed fish can be a bit mushy... Do the fish get much exercise ie do you have a power head or something in there tank to swirl the water?

Well the flesh was great... much better than the ones I can buy from the seafood shops... No I do not have a swirl effect in the tank, but 1000L for 20 odd barra is quite a bit of space to swim around...

Well that's why I do not treat them as pets... they are grown out and meant for food... same for my trouts...
Take a bit to warm up to the idea...
