Hi Guys,

Yes, I know this sounds stupid but I recently read this article on mixing fresh and saltwater fish in one aquarium. And it's possible, this article is in Indonesian. I will try to translate it for you guys. Please move this topic if it's not in the correct location, since I am new here smile.gif .Here it is:

Singkat kata tak ada ucapan lain yang keluar dari mulut mereka selain kalimat 'luar biasa'. Menurut Mulyadi, ahli kimpoi suntik ikan hias di Bandung, Jawa Barat, yang ditampilkan stan GEX itu memang anomali. Wajar stan itu menjadi bintang di Aquarama 2009.

Terobosan ini selangkah lebih maju dibandingkan inovasi serupa pada Aquarama 2007. Ketika itu stan H2O Aquarium dari Singapura juga menampilkan ikan hias laut dan tawar di satu akuarium. Namun, sesungguhnya mereka tetap hidup di dua akuarium berbeda. Pada akuarium laut berukuran 3 m x 1 m itu dibenamkan 3 buah akuarium air tawar. Sepintas ikan laut dan tawar seperti berenang bersama saat dilihat dari bagian depan akuarium.

Menurut Yuichiro Miyauchi, staf GEX, kunci teknologi penggabungan dua jenis ikan hias berbeda habitat itu adalah marine treatment yang dikembangkan oleh Yamamoto Toshimasa, dosen dari Okayama University of Science Specialized Training College. Produk itu berupa bubuk putih yang bisa meningkatkan kadar elektrolit pada air tawar. Elektrolit merupakan zat yang mudah terurai dalam bentuk ion-ion. Salah satu ikatan elektrolit yang terkenal adalah NaCl alias garam.

Miyauchi tak bersedia mengungkapkan duduk perkara bagaimana senyawa dalam bubuk tadi bekerja. Namun, saat Trubus mencoba mencicipi sedikit air akuarium yang diberi oksigen terlarut melalui aerator, terasa agak asin alias payau. Data lain yang bisa terungkap adalah pengaruh pemberian marine treatment yang tertuang di selembar kertas dan ditempel di sisi akuarium. Di sana tertulis: bubuk putih, 2 unsur mineral dalam satu boks, pH 7,2 - 7,6, salinitas 7 - 9 ppm, suhu 25?C, dan tidak beracun.

Yang tampak kasat mata, akuarium itu memakai chiller - pendingin--yang suhunya disetel 25?C dan filter biologis. Tak tampak protein skimmer, pengurai amoniak pada kondisi air asin. Sebab itu Takehito Morimoto, staf lain, menyebutkan air perlu diganti setiap 2 minggu. Kesan misterius itu belakangan menjadi gunjingan ramai di berbagai blog pengunjung pasca - Aquarama 2009. Contoh Benny Ng asal Singapura. Di blognya Benny memajang foto akuarium itu dan menyisip komentar, 'Bagaimana caranya?'.

Penelusuran Trubus menemukan fakta mengejutkan. Penyatuan ikan hias laut dan tawar dalam satu akuarium bukan hal baru. Setidaknya itu tampak dari berkas dokumen hak paten yang dikeluarkan pemerintah Amerika Serikat dengan nomor paten 3683855 pada 1971 atas nama Tronic Product Inc asal negara bagian New Jersey. Di sana diuraikan langkah-langkah pembuatan larutan yang mampu membuat ikan berbeda habitat itu nyaman hidup bersama.

Larutan itu adalah senyawa organik yang terdiri dari bahan etilen glikol dan propilen glikol. Etilen glikol dikenal sebagai cairan tak berwarna, tak berbau, dan berasa manis serta larut dalam air. Senyawa itu merupakan bahan baku utama industri tekstil, cat, kanvas rem, sampai bahan antibeku. Propilen adalah hasil samping dari pembuatan sabun dan lilin. Ia muncul sebagai reaksi dengan asam lemak dan minyak.

Larutan itu yang dicampurkan dengan campuran air laut dan tawar pada salinitas 12 - 14 ppm. Untuk mendapatkan derajat keasaman sekitar 7,2 - 7,6 seperti terjadi pada akuarium GEX, larutan diberi tambahan 0,75 - 1,5 g garam silikat metal. Silikat metal terdiri atas unsur sodium dan kalium.

Selanjutnya apa yang terjadi di tubuh ikan? Sejatinya cairan dalam tubuh ikan tawar dan laut memiliki salinitas hampir sama meski konsentrasi garam di habitat masing-masing berbeda. Salinitas cairan dalam tubuh ikan laut sekitar 2/5 ppm dari salinitas laut sebesar 33 ppm; ikan tawar 1/5. Agar keseimbangan tekanan terjaga, mekanisme osmosis bekerja di tubuh ikan. Intinya ikan akan mengatur keluar-masuk air di tubuh. Dengan alasan itu pula larutan yang disebut di atas memiliki konsentrasi garam sesuai kisaran salinitas cairan tubuh kedua ikan berbeda habitat, antara 1/5 - 2/5 ppm.

Kehadiran teknologi penggabungan ikan hias laut dan tawar itu cukup diminati hobiis. Grigorius Tam dari Yunani, misalnya, berharap dapat membeli produk marine treatment sesudah resmi dilepas di pasaran oleh GEX pada Agustus 2009. Grigorius ingin mencoba sekadar bersenang-senang. 'Saya punya sebuah akuarium laut di rumah,' kata pemilik toko perlengkapan ikan hias di Akrapolis itu.

Menurut Jemmy Gunawan di sentra ikan hias Jalan Kartini, Jakarta, teknologi ini memang berpeluang besar disukai hobiis. Pemilik gerai KDC itu merujuk saat ia bereksperimen menggabungkan ikan hias laut seperti balong, kepe-kepe, dan giro pasir, bersama tiga maskoki tossa di akuarium berukuran 60 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm pada 2007. Ini untuk pajangan di tokonya. Hasilnya? Gerai milik Jemmy dibanjiri pengunjung. 'Mereka senang melihatnya, tapi begitu tahu harga filter yang dipakai sampai Rp80-juta, mereka mundur,' katanya.

Syarat harga terjangkau diungkapkan oleh Gumilar. 'Hasil teknologi baru itu akan cepat diterima hobiis bila murah dan ramah lingkungan,' ujar Gumilar. Pun Cecep Hidayat dari Firda Aquarium di sentra ikan hias Jalan Sumenep, Jakarta Pusat, 'Kalau harganya murah pasti diminta,' ujarnya. Toh, inovasi yang ditampilkan oleh stan GEX membuka wawasan bahwa tak ada yang tak mungkin dicoba. Melihat maskoki dan ikan badut berenang bersama di satu akuarium sangat menyenangkan. This 'miracle' shown at Aquarama 2009 by GEX Corporation from Osaka,Japan. On their stand, they put a tank with measurement 100cm x 80cm x 60 cm, which consists of fresh and saltwater fish. Some clownfishes and seahorses Hippocampus sp swimming around artificial rock, while some gouramis, platies, guppies swimming at the back of the tank.

This 'unusual' view interests tens of onlookers from different countries. There is no way to describe this other than the word "magnificent". According to Mulyadi, mix breeder expert from Bandung, West java, it's very 'weird'. No wonder that stand is a 'star' on Aquarama 2009.

This method has taken a leap further compared to previous innovation back in 2007 Aquarama. At that time, Singaporean H2O Aquarium has also shown mix fresh and saltwater in one tank. But, they actually live on 2 different aquarium. On the 3m x 1m tank, 3 tanks consist of freshwater at the back of the tank, so it looks like they swimming together from in front of the tank view.

According to Yuichiro Miyauchi, GEX staff, the main key of mixing these 2 different habitats are marine treatment which was developed by Yamamoto Toshimasa, lecturer from Okayama University of Science Specialised Training College. That product is a white powder which can increase electrolite rate in freshwater. Electrolite is a substance that easily unravelled in the form of ions. One of the famous electrolite substance is NaCI aka salt.

Miyauchi reluctant on describing more on how the substance works. But, when Trubus(this Indo magazine) tried to taste the aquarium water that was given oxygen from aerator, the water taste abit salty. Other data that is unveiled is how to give the marine treatment that written on a piece of paper that sticked on the side of the aquarium. It's written : white powder, 2 minerals substance in one box, pH 7.2 - 7.6, salinity 7 - 9 ppm, 25 degree celcius and not toxic

It appears that the tank uses chiller, set to 25C and bilogical filer, protein skimmer not seen, ammonia breaker on saltwater condition. In that case, Takehito Morimoto, the other staff, said water needs to be changed every 2 weeks. This mysterious fenomenal has been a top topic to discuss in various blogs Aquarama 2009. Benny Ng from Singapore, put the photo of the tank with a comment "HOW?"

Trubus found shocking fact that this is actually not the first time that mixing saltwater and freshwater can be done. At least from the document seen, there is a patent right from US with patent number 3683855 on 1971 by Tronic Product Inc, New Jersey. From that document, it explains step by step procedure needs to be taken in order for those different habitat living together in harmony.

That liquid solution is organic compound consists of "etilen glikol and propilen glikol" (no idea how to translate this). Etilon glikol best known as no coloured liquid, no smell and taste sweet which dissolve in water. That compound is the main component of textile industries, paint, brake canvas, and anti-freeze items. Propilen is side result of soap and wax. Appeared as amino acid and oil.

That liquid solution then mixed with salt and freshwater with 12-14ppm salinity. To reach pH of 7.2 - 7.6 as shown on GEX tank, the liquid solution is given 0.75g - 1.5g of metal silicate salt. Silicate metal consists of sodium and calium element.

So what will happen to the fish body? Fact is liquid in fresh and saltwater fish are relatively the similar even the salt concentration is different to each other. Salinity of saltwater fish is around 2/5ppm out of 33ppm of saltwater salinity; 1/5 for freshwater. In order to maintain pressure stabilisation, osmosis mechanism works inside the fish body. The bottomline is fish will have control of how water will go in/out to/from its body. With that reason, the liquid solution as described above will have salt concentration of both different fish habitats around 1/5-2/5ppm.

This technology draws interests from hobbyist. Grigorius Tam from Greek, hoping to buy the official release version of GEX on August 2009. Grigorious would like to try. "I have a marine tank at home", said the owner of freshwater equipment in Acropolis.

According to Jemmy Gunawan in Kartini St, Jakarta, this technology will have big chance of drawing alot of interest from hobbyist. The owner of KDC kiosk said, having experiment mixing fresh and saltwater fish in 60cmx30cmx20cm back in 2007 for display tank. The result? The shop is crowded, they like to see it, but when told the filter costs reaching approx 80million rupiah (AU$1000), they refrain from buying it.

They cannot use ethylene glycol noting that it's an ingredient of anti-freeze and then say the mixture is non-toxic. Oh it's toxic.
