Hello all,

Im wondering if anyone here perhaps knows of anywhere that may sell Black Bream at all? (pref in WA)

Im hoping to get a few undersized fish for my tank thus they have been hard to find.

If anyone knows of anywhere or can suggest anywhere else I can try that would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Stu..

Try Golden Ponds, they used to sell them.

Or maybe Woodvale Fish & Lily Farm???

Good luck and welcome to the forum :)

Andrew

Yeah I tried golden ponds about 8 months ago, to see if they had any and they told me they stopped getting them in due to very high losses. Apparently they are pretty sensitive and the water needs to be a little bit salty, plus there extremely slow growing so not that great for aquaponics.
Haven't seen any around for ages.

Black bream have not been around for a while now sadly. Tried for aquaculture a number of years ago at feo ocean farms, but did not continue as other species more suited.

my mate has black bream in his dam now for well over 10 years and they have bred in his dam and have evolved as well having a longer snout then a standard black bream and tail is bit different as well... i have tried to get some small ones off him but hes a hoarder of everything not just fish..... may have to sneak over when hes away on holiday and try and catch a few :) i have eaten some when over his place and taste superb.... totally fresh water - definitely not a drop of salt water in the dam...

i'd like a fish species that survives winter and summer and also breeds in your aquaculture setup and doesnt eat its own fry ???

redfin perch has a bit of appeal but i'd imagine they would eat their own fry... and i'd expect fisheries prob wouldnt approve....

Silver perch taste like crap compared to black bream though, plenty of local dams around my area with silver perch and I have caught some big ones but I just put them back these days. I know of one dam that had black bream breeding in it, completely freshwater. Bream fight better and taste better than perch.

Green fingers in midland had some early in the year as did midland pet and aquarium but there is none there now. Try ringing around the hydroponics shops mate, they must still be available somewhere.

Haha ice all the freshwater around here these days is all quite covert, but I reckon we should catch up sometime for an arvo session maybe in the river or something for some flatties or anything else swimming around. Maybe you can teach me to use my fly rod lol I'm friggen hopeless but keen to learn.

No one really keeps then for aquaculture/aquaponics anymore.
They are way too slow to grow, averaging around 1cm/year.

The slow growth rate is just one of the reasons i want them.
