#330146 Good Times In A 4X2X2

Posted by rsevs3 on 28 October 2014 - 07:53 AM

So they are over a month late, but here are a few snaps :)

Matty, neither do I really, but it has a bit of sentimental attachment that I am not ready to let go of yet :)

Maybe we should try and sweet talk Ronny into doing a PCS aquarium photography course  ^_^

ps: I am actually fine in regard to petricola/multipunctatus; was just encouraging someone to leap in and explain the difference, which they duly did :)

I would not have known they were different fish if you had not pointed it out!

The way you guys all remember the Latin names is impressive to say the least. I am forever googling names to see what fish people are talking about.

Beautiful photos by the way :)

#327266 Fish Breeding

From a new person to the cichlid world, I can certainly understand how a new person could be breeding hybrids and selling them as pure bred with out even knowing.

There was a thread a few days again, maybe Kleinz, where there was a little confusion between two fish. I couldn't tell the difference until someone pointed out an easy way to tell. To make it even harder for new people to the hobby, how do you trust anyone on their word? I mean this is the internet. Then again, I suppose most people would not be too worried about hybrids as long as they look nice in their tank. Which only exacerbates the problem for people trying to keep a species pure.

For me personally, if I am breeding I would like to try and maintain a blood line. For just a display tank, a beautiful fish is a beautiful fish....

A very nub question here, but is this something to keep in mind with all cichlids?

In a few months I am hoping to start breeding something easy to keep and breed to learn. I was thinking electrics or something?

I have been stalking the forums for a few months and throwing a couple of comments in here and there. Finally i can show you all the start of my new aquarium. I dont really have any decent photos yet, although i snapped a few quick shots of the fish i have in there while they were feeding yesterday. There is still a huge amount of work left to do before i can say it resembles a decent tank, but i had to get some water in there before i left for work a few weeks ago.

You all may have seen the tank for sale on here a few weeks ago. it is a 4x2x2 that came with a custom built stand. The photos that were put up on the for sale thread didnt really give a good impression of how tall the stand was. I like it though, I am 6'2" and it saves me squatting to look in the tank. The tank stand will be getting a very cool paint job in the near future, so stay tuned for that one.

To do in the near future:

  • Overflow and sump
  • Better substrate for plants
  • Remote logging so I can check it at work. (Parts ordered, FIFO worker 2 weeks on 2 weeks off)
  • Cichlids

To do eventually cash permitting:

  • CO2 injection
  • Hood
  • Breeding
  • Bichir (Breeding?)

#312403 Looking For Some Feedback On Ap Pond

Posted by rsevs3 on 02 April 2014 - 06:12 PM

It doesnt sound like you are planning to fully bury you tank, but one thing to keep in mind for anyone who is, water runoff during rain can be catastrophic. Whether it is off your roof or from the ground, you just dont know what will be in the water. I have read quite a few threads on another forum where people have had all their fish go belly up after a rain and runoff has washed a poison etc into their AP system. It would be pretty devastating i imagine to have to drain your entire system and clean all your media again with the chance that all that work might not be enough. Obviously rain straight into your system isnt a problem.

Pawpaw grow excellently in AP. Once my system is up and going again properly, I will be chucking one in for sure.

To save the hassle of detritus in your tank, you could chuck some bird netting over your tank. The last thing you want is blocked pump in the middle of the night.
