I decided as I couldn't attend the Committee meeting tonight & the missus is working, I would take the chance to change the 4ft display inside.

Started with:

4ft Malawi Tank
Double T5 light
Aquaone 2200 canister
pH: 7.8
GH: 400ppm
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 20ppm
A.cristyi
D.compressiceps (Normal & Albino)
M.estherae (True)
L.sp.'perlmutt'
P.livingstoni
S.casuarius
Ancistrus sp.

Rocks out:

Fish out:

Gravel out:

Base rocks down first. Anyone tell me why?

Sand in, once settled. Filter on.

Next layer. Nice flat rocks

Last layer. Make sure ALL rocks a VERY stable. Take time to position correctly.

Nearly done

Finished

So the fish changes:
Took the A.cristyi out & took some of the
D.compressiceps (Normal & Albino) out.
Put in 5x C.caeruleus, 1x L.fulleborni & 1x P.taeniolatus.

base rocks in before the sand because when they move all the sand around and they will.... it wont affect the stack and crack your tank when it falls.

Thanks bud,  Yea just moved them out to the fish room. They were getting a little too picky towards the Mbuna :) and they growth rate of them was sensational. So now they are in the 6ft grow out tank. Once they have some more size they will go up to the 6x2x2.

Jayde loves watching the fish as much as the kids do. She is always telling me she wants me to do a 4x2x2 Malawi tank inside. Once I have the coinage I'll grab a cab & tank from Vebas.

Thanks mate, Im glad someone finds it helpful. ;)

Thats true, But not why I do it ;)
I always make sure the rocks I use for the base have a nice flat bottom or most of the rock is touching the base.
I do it because.... When I put the sand or gravel down, it moves into the grooves and spaces around and underneath the rocks so food and faeces don't get caught underneath and go off.
Especially in sand substrates as gases can build up and cause chaos :(

Save your coin, grab a cheap shed from gumtree, line it out with some foam.. and done :)

Just thought Id share with you all... Just heard some noise from outside like a motorbike frog near the sliding door. I opened the curtain to see my Rotti snoring her head off... Silly dog :) Totally off topic, but happened while I was typing this :)

Mate if I can offer you a little trick that I have used with my tanks in the past. Before adding your rocks, add a layer of styrofome on the inside base of your tank and then the rocks and the substrate, because not only will it prevent scratches caused by the rocks rubbing against the substrate but also if one of the rocks should come loose then the substrate along with the styrofome will absorb the impact.
